Students in Kent County benefit from the small size of the school districts and from the diverse, well-managed programs which are maintained with stable state support. An emphasis on instruction in basic skills has resulted in every school in the county scoring above national norms in reading, language and mathematics. A broad range of upper-level and advanced courses for high school students, plus programs for gifted children and for children with physical, mental or emotional challenges are available. Kent County schools are noted for their extracurricular activities including athletics, the arts, Junior Achievement, and many others. Kent County schools benefit from the state's overall high standards for education. Students in Delaware must master basic skills in order to be promoted, and high school students must master basic skills to qualify for a diploma. Kent County schools are governed by local boards of education. While the state provides most of the revenues, local boards have much input in deciding how these funds can best be used to meet the needs of the community. |

Kent County is served by two fully staffed and equipped general hospitals. Kent General (211 beds) is located in Dover. Milford Memorial Hospital (141 beds) is located in Milford. These facilities meet the vast majority of Kent County's needs. Additional care is provided by the Medical Center of Delaware, Christiana, and by referral to major teaching hospitals in Philadelphia and Baltimore. Kent County has seven private nursing homes with 599 beds. Delaware is the first state to have statewide 911 emergency call service and each county provides advanced emergency care through highly-trained Paramedic Corps and hospital trauma centers. |

For the tourist and the business traveler, there is a wide choice of hotels and motels from which to choose. Many national chains (Sheraton Dover Hotel & Conference Center, Holiday Inn, Comfort Inn, Days Inn, Hampton Inn, Best Western, Econo Lodge), as well as locally owned motels are ready to accommodate guests. |

The maior Kent County communities, as well as the Kent County Department of Parks and Recreation, offer many additional programs and facilities. Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge is a favorite spot for nature lovers, where many different species of waterfowl, deer, American Bald Eagle and small game can be observed in their natural environment. Killen's Pond State Park features camping, year-round cabins, picnic areas, nature trails, boat rentals, a pool, game courts and pavilions for visitors to enjoy. Delaware Bay and its quaint fishing towns lure the sportsman, and the Delaware ocean beaches, considered the best on the East Coast, are only an hour's drive away. For the winter sports fan, the Poconos' ski resorts are just a three hour drive away. |

Kent County can satisfy every shopper's needs. Two regional malls, numerous shopping centers in the major communities, auctions and bazaars attract shoppers from all over the Delmarva Peninsula. There is no sales tax in Kent County, Delaware, which contributes substantially to the attractive and diversified shopping choices available. |

Many annual events of regional and national importance are held in Kent County. Dover Downs, with its NASCAR race track, is the scene for two annual automobile races drawing more than 100,000 spectators each and national television audiences. Harrington hosts the annual Delaware State Fair which draws more than 200,000 visitors from all over the Delmarva Peninsula. Dover Downs and Harrington also feature harness racing from November through April. Old Dover Days, Autumn in Duck Creek, Harvest Festivals and Music Festivals are just a sampling of the special events held every year in Kent County. For a night out on the town, numerous restaurants, nightclubs and lounges featuring recorded or live entertainment, in styles ranging from top 40 to country/western, make it easy to find a place to suit most everybody's taste. Within a short drive, Wilmington offers Broadway performances at the playhouse; repertory drama at the Delaware Theatre Company; and opera, concerts, dance, and the Delaware Symphony at the Grand Opera House. In the surrounding Brandywine Valley, you can see the world famous Winterthur Museum and Gardens, tour the Hagley Museum and Nemours Mansion, visit the Delaware Art Museum, or take in Longwood Gardens and the Brandywine River Museum in nearby Pennsylvania. |

Casino-style gambling has arrived in Kent County. The first of two planned casinos to start operations is Dover Downs. A 24,000 sq. ft. building houses 500 slot machines, a restaurant and an entertainment facility. |

Three hundred years of agriculture, commerce and politics have given Kent Countians a legacy of which they are justly proud. That revered heritage is reflected at historic properties throughout the county. They include the State House, Governor's Mansion and the State Museum Complex in the State Capital, Dover; the John Dickinson Plantation south of Dover and the Maritime Museum at Bowers Beach.
In the northern part of the county, the town of Smyrna awaits the history buff with many historic sites. Belmont Hall, built in 1686, was home of Governor Collins during the ratification of the U.S. Constitution. In the Milford area, the Parson Thorne mansion, built by one of the founders of the community in 1735, and Abbots Mill are points of interest. Dover's historic Green was laid out by William Penn in 1680, and is where Delaware became the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. |
