This period stressed research in the physical sciences, such as fluid dynamics and heat transfer, laying a solid engineering base for future work in a variety of fields. Began research with early NACA/NASA organization. Served as research scientist at Langley lab in Virginia; Lewis lab in Ohio; Ames lab in California; and at HQ in Washington. During WWII served as Ensign, USNR on active duty two years testing aircraft at NAS Moffett Field, Calif. Served as project engineer for tests of Navy's first jet fighter, the Ryan FR-1. (see Ryan). After WWII began independent research in Atlanta.

1940 Degree in General Engineering from Georgia Tech.

1940 Flight training, pilot's license, at age of 19.

1941 Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Georgia Tech.

1943 Authored "Notes on Maximum Airplane Angular Velocities", NASA report on gyroscopic forces encountered by turbines in maneuvering aircraft.

1944 Authored "Possible Uses of Ceramic Materials in Aircraft Propulsion Systems", NASA report forecasting applications which are common today.

1944 Authored "Investigation of Ryan FR-1 in 40x80 Wind Tunnel", NASA report (series) on tests of Navy's first jet-propelled aircraft.

1947 Founded what may have been Atlanta's first high-tech firm, called "Southeastern Research Institute".

1947 Authored "Principles of High Speed Flight", first text on supersonic aerodynamics and jet propulsion.

1947 Authored "Geographical Distribution of Engineering Research and Related Industries in the United States", the first effort in geo-economics.

1948 As reserve officer served temporary duty at Office of Naval Research, Washington.

1948 Authored "Control of Airplane Flight Path by Propulsive Jets" describing system later adopted for spacecraft maneuvering.

1948 Authored "Directory of Engineering Data Sources", first effort in data base compilation.

1949 Launched "Journal of Southern Research" first regional science journal.

1949 Named Director of the Southern Association of Science and Industry (SASI), a 15-state development body.

During this period began serious exploration of the interface between science, industrial development, and society. Sought to apply physical science disciplines to the process of area economic development and corporate facility planning. Directed regional science and industry program, providing consulting support for Southern Governors Conference. In effect, was principal architect of the South's strategy for development of "high-tech" industries in years to come. (see HITEC).

1951 Elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

1951 National Industrial Zoning Committee.

1952 Conducted regional Science-Industry Conference, Winston- Salem, N.C.

1953 Launched "Southern Chemical Industry" a publication covering petro-chemical and other technological industries of that era.

1953 Conducted Southern Industrial Wastes Conference, New Orleans. A pioneering effort to set environmental planning standards -- long before the federal government became involved.

1954 Launched "Industrial Development", first publication devoted to investment geography, corporate facility planning, and area development.

1955 Chairman, AAAS session on "Resource Development Through Science".

1955 Received Advertising Federation of America regional public relations award in recognition of coverage in Time magazine, New York Times, wire services, etc.

1955 Named Young Man of Year by DeKalb County Jaycees; named by TIME magazine as one of Atlanta's leaders; named by FORTUNE magazine as "a man to watch".

1955 Served as Chairman, DeKalb County Planning Commission, installed county's first master plan.

1956 Purchased "Manufacturers Record", long-established Baltimore-based publication, later merged with Industrial Development.

1956 Launched "Site Selection Handbook", first comprehensive compilation of data on development organizations.

1956 Elected President of the Atlanta chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, the national journalistic organization.

1958 Produced "Gold Mine on Main Street" motion picture.

1958 Introduced the Community Audit subsequently adopted in communities around world.

1959 Produced "Blueprint For Progress" motion picture, won second prize at International Film Festival, Puerto Rico.

1959 Served as Chairman, Local Government Study Commission, created by Georgia legislature.

During this period, Conway extended geo-economic studies from regional to global scope, and undertook major public service responsibilities. The common denominator was the attempt to introduce scientific concepts and systems into broad area economic, political, and governmental activities. Much time was spent working in less-developed nations.

1960 Made pioneering flight through West Indies, across South America and through Central America in single-engine Cessna 182 to explore development potential. (see CARIB).

1960 Conducted editorial survey of United Kingdom, first of many studies of nations around the globe.

1960 Authored "Area Development Guide", a text for community and area developers.

1961 Founded the Industrial Development Research Council, conducted first IDRC seminar in New York.

1962 Conducted IDRC second annual seminar, New York.

Recognizing that ideas and concepts are merely conversation pieces unless they are implemented, the Conway emphasis was shifted to problems of application. This period saw numerous efforts to relate new ideas and advanced concepts to specific development projects involving practical problems of budget, schedule, and environmental impact. Programs included feasibility studies, conceptual plans, working designs, and implementation strategies for a wide range of projects in diverse locations. The fly-in concept of unimodal transport centers received special attention. (see SPRUCE CREEK).

Recognizing that much data had been accumulated by the firm during preceding decades, emphasis was placed on development of automated systems for storing, retrieving, interpreting, and distributing geo-economic data. The entry of the micro-computer opened new opportunities for research and professional services. Among these were the development of a global telecommunications network and a series of software programs for coordinating data inputs of development groups.

Having studied the disciplines and observed events for 40 years, Conway had established relationships between scientific research, technological innovation, and economic development. Hence, greater attention was given to the role of futurism in identifying emerging sciences, forecasting breakthroughs, and predicting developments. This led to establishment of the World Development Council (now the World Development Federation) and a focus on global super projects such as the great global HIWAY.
