The University of Navarre is one of three higher education institutions in Navarre,
that, combined, educate a student population of 27,000.

When the competition for new industry heats up between Navarre and the surrounding provinces, the government's creativity and flexibility can sometimes push the choice in favor of Navarre. To underscore the point, we give one recent example of an auto components company that landed a big new contract and needed room to expand production. And it needed the room quickly -- it had just three weeks to select a site. An adjacent province offered a site seven miles away from the company's current production facility. SODENA was approached by the mayor of a city outside Navarre to see if some acceptable site could be found to relocate the company in Navarre. The company is now occupying a Navarre town's former football field, using its attendant energy, water and sewer systems.

Appreciating the company's short time frame, Navarre allowed it to start construction of the plant without official approvals. The paperwork moved in tandem with the construction.

Map: Vocation Training CentersNavarre has a refined lifestyle, and the standard of living is quite high. For years Navarre has held position at the top of Spain for measurements of social well-being. Navarre's highly specialized health services have international prestige, and the citizens enjoy first-class health care. The number of doctors and hospital beds easily exceeds the national average, as do expenditures for health services. Life expectancy -- 77.5 years -- is higher than the European average.

Education levels are also higher than Spain's average: One of three Navarrans goes on to higher education, and the presence of three universities stimulates cultural activities.

Map: Industrial EstatesThe Navarrese take their environmental stewardship seriously. For example, Pamplona's exemplary recycling agenda is always the first or second ranking program in Spain. Over 75 percent of residents take part voluntarily. Pamplona exports its technology and training expertise to other Spanish cities in collection and reuse of waste materials.
