Attendees will have the option of visiting these sites on
Monday, Nov. 13, or on Thursday, Nov. 16.
Royal Commission Visitor Center
First-time visitors to Jubail are offered a complete overview of the industrial operations,
the port and the residential areas at the Visitor Center. Following a brief video
on the history, status and goals for Jubail and its sister city Yanbu, visitors will be
guided through a series of interactive displays that explain how the city was planned
and built. The major infrastructure systems are modeled, including the Seawater
Cooling System and the Industrial Port. A new display on the second floor shows
samples of the different products produced by the primary industries. It also shows
how the industries are connected to the gas supply systems of Saudi Arabia, their
primary source of feedstocks, and how many are interconnected with other industries,
which supply some of their products as feedstock for them. The modern,
spacious Visitor Center provides a relaxing introduction to Jubail.
Major Petrochemical Facility: Saudi Petrochemical Company
The Saudi Petrochemical Company (SADAF), one of the 17 primary industries
in Jubail Industrial City, is the largest of the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation
(SABIC) petrochemical companies. It was established in 1980 as a joint venture
with Pecten Arabian Co., a wholly owned affiliate of Shell Oil Co., U.S.A.
Production of ethylene began in 1984. Additional production units came on-stream
in 1985. The current production of SADAF includes ethylene, ethylene dichloride,
styrene, crude industrial ethanol and caustic soda. Visitors will be able to see major
portions of the facility and understand how a typical petrochemical facility in Jubail
obtains its feedstock and utilities and ships products to other users or markets
throughout the world.
Seawater Cooling Facility
Jubail has a 25-km, open-canal system that supplies industrial cooling water to
the large industries. The water is pumped from the Arabian Gulf by two pumping
stations and flows by gravity through a three-compartment canal to the industries
and back to a discharge system to the Gulf. The maximum amount of water delivered
into the supply canal in the summer is currently nearly 600,000 cubic meters
per hour. When it reaches its maximum capacity, over 1 million cubic meters per
hour will be supplied. This equals two thirds of the combined flow of the Tigris and
Euphrates Rivers! The tour will include the Administration Building, where a model of
the system will be used to explain how the various parts are designed and operated.
Guests will then tour a pumping station and see the seawater as it is screened and
pumped up into the canal.
Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC)
Saudi Arabia produces and consumes more desalinated water than any other
nation in the world. SWCC, which was established in 1974 as the primary
producer and distributor of potable water, now has a total installed capacity of 481
million gallons per day from 21 plants located along the Arabian Gulf and Red Sea.
The largest of its plants is near Jubail. This plant, the largest installation of its kind
in the world, can supply up to 200 million gallons of desalinated water per day,
providing the primary water supply for Jubail and for the capital city of Riyadh,
some 900 km to the west. The plant also can produce up to 1,650 MW of
electricity. Visitors to the facility will be shown through the major sections of this
massive installation and will gain a good understanding of the operating principles
of desalination of seawater and the cogeneration of electricity.
