Mr. Wakelin's responsibilities are to research and develop innovative generic models of leading-edge, value-added offerings and to develop experimental prototypes. Building on experience from developing the Nevada Test Site (NTS) Office of Strategic Development and other enterprise offerings, Mr. Wakelin is developing the "Strategic Regional Enterprise Initiatives" offering. The concept is to insert a development team into a host organization, or alliance partnerships, in order to develop projects that leverage and add value to the customer alliance assets. Mr. Wakelin led an innovative visioning process designed to develop a "Shared Vision 2020 for Southern Nevada," as a first step to transform Las Vegas into a strategic global city region. The process was co-authored by Arthur D. Little, Inc. and the IC2 Institute at the University of Texas.

More recently, Mr. Wakelin participated in the development of a vision and expansion for the capital city of Hanoi in Vietnam (1997) and in the vision of Brazil's infrastructure needs in 2020 (1998).

His current research focus (1997-1999) is upon knowledge management of the intellectual capital assets of strategic regions, global cities and consortiums of transnational corporations, including their knowledge networks, exchanges, and uses (KNEXUS). At Stanford University and the University of Texas and he is actively involved in the process of organizing a global fellows network between collaborating corporations and institutions in support of research into the acceleration of knowledge exchange, the with the expectation to expand the KNEXUS network globally, linking knowledge-creating regions in the developed world to strategic regions in emerging countries, such as China, Brazil, and India.
