Description and Comments

Malaysian Prime Minister Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has created Vision 2020 for Malaysia, a national agenda for long-term development that sets out a 20-year timeframe for achieving leadership in the Information Age. The Multimedia Super Corridor is the cornerstone of the plan. It is a greenfield "corridor" approximately 9 miles wide and 30 miles long stretching from the Kuala Lumpur City Centre south to the site of the region's largest international airport, the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, which was commissioned in 1998.

Two of the world's first Smart Cities are being developed in the Corridor: Putrajaya, the new administrative capital of Malaysia and seat of government, and Cyberjaya, an intelligent city with multimedia industries and R&D centers. The electronic backbone of the development is a digital fiber-optic network that will link the corridor to the United States, Japan and Europe.

The three key projects for the corridor are the new capital, Putrajaya, the new airport, and the Kuala Lumpur City Center, which is a massive office project and the site of the Petronas Twin Towers, currently the world's tallest buildings.
