Description and Comments
In 1990, the Chinese government began a massive campaign to develop the Pudong area of Shanghai. The objective was to rejuvenate Shanghai's world status, form a new urban area, and stimulate economic development in the Yangtze River Valley and the neighboring coastal cities and areas.
From 1990 to 1995, $US 3 billion was invested in a number of major infrastructure projects, including the Nanpu Bridge and the Yangpu Bridge across the Huangpu River, an expressway, a deep-water harbor, a water plant, a gas project, first phase of a power plant, sewage facilities and communications equipment.
The second phase, 1996 to 2000, involves an investment of $US 12 billion in 10 major infrastructure projects. They are: Pudong International Airport ($US 1.45 billion), Outer Ring Road, deepwater harbor, light railway transit system, water supply and drainage project, river-crossing project, Metro Line II, Pudong International Information Port, Waigaoqiao Power Plant, and the East China Sea Natural Gas Project.
