    Additional Notes for 1996 Conference

  18. Bangkok Airport -- The Airports Authority of Thailand is building a new $4 billion airport near Bangkok. General Engineering Consultants is providing program management.
  19. Tokyo airport expansion -- An investment of several billion dollars has been authorized by the Japanese government to expand the existing Haneda downtown airport and to plan a third airport at a location yet to be chosen. Both will augment service at Narita.
  20. Brazil -- proposed new airport for Buenos Aires would be located on an artificial island. The project has not yet been approved by government body responsible.
  21. Korea -- Bechtel has received an extension on its contract for planning a high speed rail link between Seoul and Pusan, a distance of 270 miles (430 kilometers).
  22. Los Angeles -- Work continues on the $15 billion metro rail project.
  23. Pacific -- Construction is proceeding on the two vessels which will serve as a water-borne launch pad for new space vehicles. Termed Sea Launch, the venture involves aerospace manufacturer, Boeing; the Norwegion shipbuilder, Kvaerner, A.S.; and Russian rocket experts. First launch is planned for 1998.
  24. San Francisco -- A $1 billion reconstruction for the Bay Bridge is being planned in order to make the structure less susceptible to earthquake damage.
  25. UK -- The $3 billion high speed rail link to connect the chunnel with London has been approved.
  26. Space -- The space station being planned by the USA, Russia, and other nations will actually enter the construction phase in 1997, with completion set for 2003. Some 34 space missions are scheduled to deliver 400 tons of facilities.Another 10 missions will be needed to deliver supplies and replace scientific payloads.
